Hi, I am Jina and I am an art historian, writer, and journalist based in Vienna, Austria. I write criticisms and reports on art, design, contemporary culture, and economy news from Europe mostly for the Korean audience. I studied sociology (Yonsei University, B.A. 1994) and art history (Hong-ik University, M.A. 1998) in Seoul, Korea. I started working in journalism as editor at Newsweek Korea (Joongang Ilbo Daily Newspaper, 1994-97) and guest editor at Monthly DESIGN magazine (Design House, Ltd.,1996-98).

I have worked as curatorial intern at the National Museum of American Art (Now Smithsonian American Art Museum) in Washington, D.C. (1998), the Museum of Modern Art in New York (1999), and Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy (2000). Exhibitions such as “George Catlin and His Indian Gallery“ (September 6, 2002 – January 20, 2003 at the Smithsonian American Art Museum), “MOMA2000 – Open Ends“ (September 28, 2000–March 4, 2001), and “Gerhard Richter – Forty Years of Painting“ (February 14–May 21, 2002) are some of my contributions.

Since 2001 I have regularly contributed news, reports and reviews on art, design, and culture for a number of magazines and periodicals, including WOLGAN MISOOL Monthly Art Magazine, Monthly DESIGN, CHRONOS Korea, HAUTE and Contemporary magazine (U.K.) [publication closed]. My columns appeared also on artnet.com  [“Pause for Thought – Gwangju Biennale 4″ Review, “Manifesta 2002” Review] (U.S.), Gwangju Biennale Guide Quarterly, Cultural Space (Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, Seoul), and Noblesse, and ARKO Humanities 360° project (Arts Council Korea, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism).

For over 10 years, I consulted on content creation and planning – my expertise in European culture and contemporary trends – for Korean conglomerate media organs and government publications, such as SK Telecom, LG Hausys (LG Chemical subsidiary), and Samsung SDI, and Seoul Design Foundation (a cultural initiative by Seoul Metropolitan Government), to name a few.

I translated two English books into Korean”  Idolizing Pictures － Idolatry, Iconoclasm and Jewish Art by Anthony Julius (Thames & Hudson, 2001/ trans. 2003, Chohyong Education) and 20th Century Design by Jonathan M. Woodham (Oxford History of Art Series, Oxford University Press, 1997/ trans. 2007, Sigongsa). My English translation of a Korean book on K-beauty has been published in 2019 (Knowledge & Common Sense).

I curated “Open 24 Hours,” a group contemporary art exhibition which went on view in September 2007 at Chungmu Art Hall in Seoul, South Korea. Seen through the eyes of 8 Korean artists, the exhibition examined how the 24-hour society formed economy and lifestyles and the spirit of entrepreneurship . 박진아는 연세대학교 사회학과(학사)와 홍익대학교 대학원 미술사학과(석사)를 전공한 후, 중앙일보사 한국판 Newsweek 誌 제작위원 (1994-97년), 월간 디자인지 객원 기자 (1996-98년)로 일하며 언론에 입문했습니다. 현대 서양 미술사학 석사 학위 수여 직후, 미국 워싱턴 D.C. 스미소니언 국립 미국 미술관 (Smithsonian American Art Museum, 1998년), 뉴욕 모마 근대미술관 (Museum of Modern Art, New York, 로버트 스토어 Robert Storr 지휘 하 “MOMA 2000” 전과 “게르하르트 리히터 회고전 Gerhard Richter Retrospective” 전시 연구)(1999년), 이탈리아 베니스 페기 구겐하임 컬렉션 Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice (2000년)에서 전시 인턴과 연구보조원으로 일했습니다.

월간미술, 디자인하우스, SK텔레콤, 엘지화학, 세종문화회관 회원지 등 국내 대기업 및 재단법인 사내외 매체 컨텐츠 제작 및 기고활동을 통해 현대미술 평론가 및 디자인 컬럼니스트로 활동했으며, artnet.com®(미국)에 기고 및 Contemporary 매거진(영국)의 비엔나 에디터로 영문 미술비평 및 리포트를 기고했습니다. 2000년부터 현재까지 월간미술 비엔나/카타르(2008-2009년) 통신원, 월간디자인, 디자인 정글, 녹색경제신문, 패션인사이트 등에 미술 평론, 디자인, 경제 트렌드 분야의 원고를 정기 기고하고 있습니다.
