Are we working around-the-clock? – Life in the 24-Hour Society

Open 24 Hours, contemporary art exhibition goes on view from September 6th to 20th, 2007.

In the eyes of many outsiders the workings of the Korean economy and its sustaining power remain a mystery, if not a myth. Pinched between China and Japan, Korea proves to be uniquely inventive in its tactics of survival despite the peninsula’s turbulent history.

After the aftermath of the Japanese imperial rule during the Second World War and Korean War, the agrarian and impoverished South Korea has emerged from one of the poorest countries to the 12th largest economy on the globe.

In response to its unique position both in place and time, Koreans have developed unique strategies. Koreans live a dichotomy of two major currents: The Confucianist framework with strict regulations and ways of life is one and hypermodernity is the other.

Korea jumped from a pre-modern agrarian society to a hyper-modern, wifi- and mobile phone-connected industrial powerhouse. What happened to values and mindsets? How do people, living in a country of accelerated time, cope? “Open 24 Hours – Life on the Edge” finds the key in time and spirit. What holds Korean society all together seems to be an untiring spirit for making business – against all odds.

Conceived by Jina Park, writer on contemporary art, the exhibition includes works by 7 young Korean artists capturing unique aspects of Korean entrepreneurship.

Open 24 Hours, with the support of Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, will present 7 young and internationally active Korean artists, who will comment on the unique aspects of entrepreneurship of Koreans and the state of work and life in the constantly-on-the-move 24 hour society.

Open 24 Hours show is looking forward to its vernissage on the 6th of September 2007 at Chungmu Art Hall in central Seoul. The exhibition will be on view for public from September 6th to 20th, 2007. Bilingual exhibition catalogue is avaliable online at the press section of the exhibition website.

우리나라의 경제는 지난 반세기여 동안 눈부신 경제 발전을 이룩해 왔다. 나날이 급변하고 숨가쁘게 전개되는 경제 환경 및 사회 문화발달과 발맞추어 나가기 위하여 우리나라는 세계 그 어떤 국가나 문화권에서도 찾아보기 드문 매우 독특한 경제적 생존 전략을 발전시켜 왔다.

유럽의 제 1,2 차 세계대전이 전개되던 20 세기초엽 일본의 제국주의에 이어서 일제로부터의 해방 직후 경험한 한국 전쟁을 끝으로, 한낱 농경제를 기반으로 한 매우 가난한 북동아시아 국가로서 출발한 우리나라의 근현대사는 오늘날 각종 산업과 첨단 기술을 기초로 한 세계 12 위의 경제 강국으로 성장하였다.

그같은 한국인들의 특성은 21 세기초 바로 지금 현재 한국 경제에 구체적으로 어떻게 발휘되며 기여하고 있을까? 우리나라에는 다른 어느 나라에도 존재하지 않는 매우 독특하고 유일 무이한 상품이나 서비스가 많이 존재할 뿐만 아니라 제품/서비스 생명주기도 매우 변화무쌍하게 탄생과 사멸을 반복한다.

우리나라 다방면에 걸쳐 펼쳐지고 있는 경제 활동은 새로운 창업 아이디어, 개선과 변화를 추구하는 급변성, 새로운 마케팅 및 판매 전략과 전술에 따른 신속한 수용과 응용 면에서 매우 적극적이며 변화무쌍하다.

그렇다면 그같은 한국의 경제 성공의 비결과 비결의 원천은 무엇일까? 본 전시의 기획자 박진아는 그에 대한 해답의 단서를 한국인의 지치지 않는 사업가 정신과 하루 24 시간/일주일 7 일/일년 365 일 내내 지치지 않고 일에 투신전념하는 한국인 특유의 노동 정신과 적극적인 생존력에서 찾고, 그와 같은 정신성을 현대 미술가 7인의 미술 작품들을 통해서 점검 비평해 보고자 한다.

참여 작가들의 작품들은 작가 저마다의 관찰력 및 개별적인 개성을 작품을 통해서 승화시키고 있을 뿐만 아니라 21 세기 특유의 유동적이고 글로벌화된 현대인의 라이프스타일을 현대적인 조형 시각 언어로 보여주는데 성공하고 있다.

이 전시에 참여하는 작가들은:손한샘,이주은,안세은,최원정,주영신,조병왕,김형석 등 이상 7 인이다.

현대 미술이 한국적 특유의 경제 활동상을 조망해 보는 것을 통하여 한국 문화가 지닌 독특한 측면들과 특징을 새로운 각도에서 조명해 보고 여러 현대 작가들의 눈에 비친 우리나라의 경제 환경은 일반 관객들은 물론 우리나라 사회문화에 대한 이해와 성찰의 기회를 제공할 수 있는 이 전시는 인현대사회를 연구하는 사회 및 인류 문화학자들에게도 값지고 유용한 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 여겨진다.

왜?19 세기 네덜란드의 역사학자 헨릭 빌렌 반 로온이 지적했던 것처럼 “미술은 증권시장이나 국회 토론 보다 세상이 돌아가는 형편을 훨씬 더 효과적으로 보여주는 척도”이기 때문이다.

24 시간 영업 전은 현대 미술작가들의 눈을 통해서 대중과 전문가가 공히 우리의 오늘을 환기하고 재고해 볼 수 있는 사색과 성찰의 기회를 마련해 줄 것이다.
